The Life We Choose

Decisions and destiny in lush Northeast Texas...
Everyone knew the Murdocks of Murdock Mains were a fractured family, so when life circumstances reunites them along the banks of the Sulphur River in Northeast Texas, it’s not a question of when drama will erupt; rather, what the toll will be. With a special needs son, independent daughter Maren bore enough responsibility even before being pressured by elder brother Price to help him deal with their angry, embittered father. Cap has suffered a bad accident, which uncovers another health issue that will force him to be forever reliant on the very offspring he abused and rejected.

Price, however, isn’t quite the heroic, big brother Maren once adored. Fed up with being treated like less than a ranch hand, he struck out on his own. But the siblings’ happy reunion is showing cracks, too, as some of Price’s tactics and choices could expose decisions that aren’t as ethical as they should be.

Maren finds unexpected help in Dr. Gabriel Cabrera, the area veterinarian, whose failed marriage to his lifelong friend and sweetheart has left him lonely, but too cautious to do much about it. Until he realizes that he and Maren’s paths had crossed before—at another life-altering moment.

Decisions and destiny vibrate through this lush and dramatic story of loss, loneliness, and love’s triumph through faith.

Highly recommended!

"The Life We Choose, written by Myers & Reed, is a compelling novel about a fractured family that will break your heart and restore your faith. The characters are so richly developed that you’ll be thinking about them long after you’ve closed the book and contemplating how brokenness often leads to the greatest, unexpected blessings."

A wonderful, many layered love story

"This latest offering from the writing team of Helen Myers and Gail Reed is about the curve balls life throws at us and the choices we make to handle them.  It was so easy to picture the house and surrounding out buildings, all the critters, and especially the feral hogs that are a problem everywhere.

A Story Everyone Can Relate to

"Wow, what a story! This touches on some deep subjects that almost all families can relate. Great characters, a beautiful story, excellent writing by Myers and Reed! I'm already anxious for their next one. I predict it'll be a keeper as this one was."

Life & Spice

Ghosts from the past, And the relentless momentum of time...
On September 8, 1900, a hurricane unlike any previously recorded hit Galveston, Texas. To this day, an exact death toll cannot be confirmed, but the harrowing storm continues to be known as one of the worst human and geographic tragedies in America’s young history.

In the midst of all the destruction, faith saved a fisherman from a vicious sea. Over a century later in the very same post office-turned-restaurant where the impossible occurred, his story lives on.

The restaurant is now a historical site preserving the mail slot that accepted his letter to God when he thought he would never see his beloved family again. Called Vita e Spezie tourists from everywhere come to see where the miracle took place—and sometimes post their own letters of desperation, loneliness, and need.

The Italian family operating the third-generation establishment is dealing with their own crises. Health issues, past mistakes, and daily stress are wearing them down, and there are signs the business won’t be around for another generation.

Then the arrival of a gifted pastry chef–and hours later—a son thought lost, changes everything. Suddenly, the family that believes they took on a burden too great when they promised to honor the past, discovers their future is a gift from the past. And from it flows an ultimate truth…

Beautiful story

"I love books that make you laugh and cry. This was a beautiful read. The characters are well developed and the story is one of faith and family those your are related to and the other you make."

A Flock of Sparrows

A moving, dramatic and uplifting story by a new voice!
It’s just before Thanksgiving in East Texas when five widows band together to survive the onslaught of a premature, once-in-a-century winter storm.

Not all of the adventure and drama is happening outside. Hour by hour, emotional and psychological upheaval grows as secrets are revealed, until all five are forced to understand that sometimes you have to risk everything to reach life’s richest plateaus.

I enjoyed this book a great deal

"These are "real" women... women who could actually BE in my life. Not characters with a lifestyle so outside of the realm of my world. Some experienced, some not so much, younger, older, and older fighting to be younger. Love and disappointments, dreams still waiting to be achieved. All shared, a bit reluctantly or full blown -- these are conversations that we've all had...or will have... at some point in our lives."

An Engaging Tale

"This masterfully written book is about relationships, losses, choices, and hardships. This book will resonate with anyone who has lost a loved one and how they deal with this loss. It is rich with descriptive prose that makes you want to never have the book end."

Epic...

"As a long-time fan of Helen R. Myers, I was very excited to learn of her return to novel-length fiction in this collaborative effort. However, familiar as I am with Helen's astounding mastery of the written word, even I was blown away with the absolute beauty and depth of this intensely emotional, intensely personal character-driven novel."
